The story about hydraulic engineering and the step pyramid caught my eye because it resonates with speculations in Bernal’s Black Athena that parts of Greece were reshaped around that same time (2500 BC) by Egyptian masters of hydraulics. It’s been years since I read the book β€” I’ll have to pull it out and have another look.

The Bernal is a very long, multi-volume work. The basic facts of the massive engineering achievements at Lake Copais are widely available, as at the link below, though generally dated to 2100 BC, based on a single find of some pottery fragments. Bernal, as I recall, is unique in dating it somewhat earlier and suggesting an Egyptian connection, and his conclusions are not universally accepted. Still, there are significant mysteries involving the project.
